Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, a cultural, architectural and social landmark overlooking the Avon River and Victoria Square, was officially opened in 2021.
The world-class venue with expansive interiors and cutting-edge design is managed by ASM Global, a renowned venue management brand with a commendable track record of operating sports, entertainment and leisure centres worldwide. With a 1,400-seat tiered auditorium, 1,000-seat banquet space and other purpose-built facilities, Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre delivers a tailored experience to the citizens, clients, guests and delegates.
TenFour had a massive contribution in completing the three-year-long undertaking of making the Christchurch Convention Centre a landmark in terms of technology and scale. While we developed close relationships with our collaborators and clients, the project had challenges.
Working on a live construction site, we coordinated the AV technology installations with other aspects of the venue. Our dedicated staff and technicians supported the integration, ensuring technical resources and project support were available at all times. We are proud of the TenFour team members, who, through sheer resilience and hard work, have taken the project to its completion.
In coordination with CPB Contractors and WSP consultants, TenFour was responsible for the complete audio-visual fit out of an outdoor advertising screen, three separate buildings, building-wide background music systems, emergency warning and intercommunication systems, digital signage and evacuation integration.
We opted for the Tripleplay IPTV system, installing over 40 IPTV, wayfinding screens and digital signage across the site. The installations enable operators to easily record and stream content throughout the venue with touch panel controls set up in the auditorium. Tripleplay servers store content for editing and distribution as needed.
For the control systems, we used the Crestron Fusion for end-to-end visibility of room status with advanced notification features alerting our helpdesk and on-site dashboards of glitches. We can remotely access the control systems to find faults and fix them through the Crestron X Panel software. The venue-wide network-based audio distribution and amplification are supported by the QSC QSYS Core 510 Audio processor.
An operable wall system separates the convention centre’s auditorium into two sections. A Samsung Indoor Touring LED screen with flexible ratios (16:9 and 32:9) caters to both the whole and divided auditorium spaces. We partnered with Bartons Sounds NZ to install the Martin Audio Multi-Cellular Line-Array loudspeaker system for the auditorium. Finally, the exterior of the Plenary Building was fitted with an outdoor LED video wall with large single and multiple image configurations.
14 meeting spaces in the convention centre were equipped with high-end Christie laser data projectors with Ultralift lifters and Panasonic 4K PTZ cameras. Two JBL speakers, multiple EV high-ceiling speakers and an AKG dual receiver microphone unit provide the in-room audio. We used Samsung 200-inch LED screens with JBL Intellivox speakers to enhance the AV experience of the spaces. The Banquet Halls have a similar fit out as the meeting spaces, with two next-level Christie laser projectors and 30 JBL high-ceiling pendant speakers.
To make the convention centre spaces accessible, we installed Williams Sound IR-based hearing assistance units with automatic volume adjustment based on the ambience. EV ceiling speakers provide the background music while the paging systems are programmed to operate in sync with the local LED screen schedule.
